First Sports Day and Birthday in Japan

[My funky staff sports day t-shirt.]

My first Japanese Sports Day - 運動会 undoukai - was so exciting! Ok, I was working on a weekend and it was my birthday, but I had enough fun to make up for it ;) The sports days here have so much more going on compared to England, there were the standard track and field type races, but human structures, 3-legged races (in secondary school?!), centipede races, suffering サファリング races which are basically obstacle races, and something like a going around the clock face races!?

I'd offered to be the Camera Lady, so they provided me with a compact camera. Then I discovered that they had hired a professional with all his DSLR equipment... which was fine, if he went in one direction I went the opposite way. I took part in the PTA tug-of-war against the 3rd years (we drew by the way), and presented the girls' dance show - I was so happy when they asked me, maybe they were impressed by my DJ-ing skills or maybe... because everyone else was busy... ... I decided to go with the former - anyway, I was feeling kind of nervous, it was a bit last minute, and I wasn't sure what the response from the local crowd would be when I went into Circus-Master-slash-"Woooo!"-mode. In the end, I was worrying for nothing, everyone clapped in the right places, and it was perfectly alright for the Japanese-looking foreigner to fist pump and shout, "Woooo!! You go girls!!"

After work, I met up with a couple of mates for some birthday drinks (by the way, this green tea soymilk and black sugar cocktail I tried was niiice!), and just couldn't handle anything more afterwards, I was completely knackered...but in a good way, it'd been a great day ;)

NB: I'll post some pics of sports day as soon as I get my hands on them. Unfortunately, I had to return the camera before I had a chance to copy them.
