The Last Show

I did my last lunch time radio show yesterday. It's been about one year and eight months since I started doing the show. There was some resistance against having an English show, the broadcasting committee were concerned that students wouldn't understand... which was kind of the whole point of doing it in the first place, to train their ears, hear English outside of the classroom in a relaxed atmosphere, and expose them to non-Japanese music.

Anyway, it's been fun. I felt a little sad, but hopefully my new school will allow me to do something similar.

There's just one more week left. I'm been practicing my farewell speeches... Japanese intonation and stress patterns are different from those in English. I keep on stressing, and rising and lowering the intonation in the wrong places!! I know, I'm giving myself unnecessary stress, I'm a foreigner, I don't have to be so anal about it, especially for something that won't even last a minute, but I want to show my students (and teachers) that with a little effort, even non-natives users of a language can sound 'convincing'.

Thanks, I'll need it. Standing on stage, and doing a speech in front of all my students in Japanese is a daunting prospect.
