My first lesson of the block, and unfortunately it didn't go too well. I sort of caught hold of the situation near the end but... well I can tell you that teaching primary (elementary) school children has a completely different feeling to kindergarten, so... I need to practice, practice, in fact I'll be practicing everyday. There's absolutely no excuse not to be a capable teacher by the end of these 6 weeks. Saying that, the Head of Department has become my link tutor, and I've got only one more chance to practice before she comes to observe me...

Sorry My Dear but you have moved into a New World???????? Many of these 'Little Hooligoons' do not have Discipline in their vocabulary and so spoil it for the good ones. If you think you are losing control, place a 12" Ruler on the Desk Top firmly holding one end down and bend the other end up to almost breaking point, then let it go, the resounding crash will soon gain their attentention and produce a few second of complete silence, then you must immediately gain control.
Remember the Donkey and the Carrot?
As soon as possible discover their 'Must Haves' and remove them until they behave, it is amazing what a child will do if you remove a 'favourite' then replace it when they comply. Something that was abhorant can become a habit which they find difficult to break.

That's interesting advice Ron.
The techniques that I am encouraged to use involve 'consequences', with lots of focus on the positives. For example, zoning in on good behaviour and giving lots of praise. It's important to be consistent, so that children know what the expectations are. In this way, children can be encouraged to display positive behaviour.
It is difficult, and children being children, will need constant reminding. However just by this one seemingly simple task of maintaining expectations, children are learning better, are feeling calmer and less confused, and know exactly where they stand in the classroom.
This is actually one of my targets right now. I've had some very helpful discussions from teachers and tutors, but it is just so difficult to apply!
