Cheung Chau

Destination: Cheung Chau 長洲

Facts: Cheung Chau is 2 km long, and is the most densely populated outlying island.

Transport: Ferry from Central Pier no.5

Comments: I know I went to Cheung Chau before for the Bun Festival, but that time I only stayed in town, so I didn't get to see the rest of the island.

It took about 3-4 hours to walk around the central and southern parts of the island. Walking along the coastline, oddly shaped rocks such as 'Vase Shape Rock' and 'Human Shape Rock' were scattered along the route we followed. Kwun Yum Wan Beach is where windsurfers can ride the waves. Lee Lai Shan who began surfing here, won Hong Kong's first gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics 1996.

Cheung Po Tsai Cave 張保仔洞 is said to be where a Chinese pirate hid his treasure. It's only a small cave, not even 100m long. Going down was certainly an experience. It's pitch black down there, going in and exploring would be absolutely impossible unless you had a torch. Both entrance and exit were quite narrow, my brother would have extreme difficulty going through. There were no bats that I could see, but the darkness along with the dripping water really created an eery atmosphere. It's definitely a must try!
