Should have mentioned this last week, but had these annoying things called 'future' and 'career' getting up my nose, anyway I started Mandarin classes last Saturday - yes, yes another piece of future-thinking, keeps my nose to the grindstone it does - and it's a bit slow going so far. I chose to attend Beginners Mandarin classes with Chinese as the medium, and the teacher really takes for granted that 90% of the class learnt some Mandarin when they were at school. Now I can just manage to cope using the Chinese I know, although the teacher's rushed and messy simplified Chinese writing does make it a rougher sailing then it really needs to be, I've no idea how the Brazilian student is coping when she doesn't know a speck of Chinese. Why not go and learn from an English-speaking teacher, perhaps you'll learn better I hear you say. Well, I'm not really up to forking out another $3000 (roughly £200) when I can use this opportunity to improve my Chinese skills, it keeps me on my toes, and I get two birds with one stone. Great...Lots of plans for sight-seeing! With the Cheung Chau Bun Festival and a walk across the new Hong Kong-Shenzhen (China) Western Corridor on my list, more on that nearer the time.
